In our society gold symbolizes and indeed is coined as value in many things. For this reason sports trophies and awards are usually made of gold to symbolize the top achievement. This precious metals theme continues with silver and bronze being awarded for second and third place finishes. This has evolved further to include lower place finishes and participation trophies.

Basketball being a tremendously active sport, the figure most often placed on the pinnacle of basketball trophies is a jumping shooting player.
